Abeera - Matilda

No matter how many arguments we fight with our parents, at the end of the day, they always want the best for us. To many of us, there isn’t a such thing as “bad parents.” However, Matilda proves wrong. When one remembers there childhood, they think of the good memories, however Matilda couldn’t with her circumstances. Born to grumpy parents, and a sibling of a bratty brother, Matilda is different from the rest of her family. Ignored and treated cruelly by her family and school principal, Matilda relies on books to escape. She eventually develops telekinetic powers and is on the verge of replacing her so called family with someone who actually genuinely cares about her, Miss Honey.
A movie that stands the test of time, has a universal connection, and displays its own sense of originality is a classic movie.  Matilda encompasses all of these requirements and proves to be an all time classic to many Americans. Like classic movies, Matilda leaves an after effect, it makes you ponder with different thoughts that revolve around life: family, morals, passions, and love. A classic movie like Matilda isn’t afraid to show the concrete truth about all these thoughts.
You can’t have a classic movie, without having utterly tremendous actors. With the acting of Mara Wilson (Matilda), Danny DeVito (Matilda’s father) and Rhea Perlman( Matilda’s mother) nightmares become reality. Constantly ignoring there daughter and her passion (education), the ignorant parents often forget their role. She encompasses her free time reading and becomes fascinated. This brilliant little girl somehow develops telekinetic powers and begins to use the phenomenon to drive away her ignorant family. Throughout the process, her family and principal continue to treat her disgustingly. Her parents refuse to buy her books, don’t feed her healthy, and proudly mock her for being intelligent. “I'm smart; you're dumb. I'm big; you're little. I'm right; you're wrong and there's nothing you can do about it,” is the way her mom talks to her.  At school her principal who passionately hates children puts her in a “chokey” that’s studded with nails inside and overall a scary place for a young child to be in. However, a sweet teacher named Miss Honey saves Matilda and brings her back into the classroom. Back in the classroom, somehow Matilda uses her powers and tips over her principals water for revenge. After the chaos, Matilda trusts Miss Honey and tells her about her powers. Miss Honey and Matilda grow really close and embrace a “mother-daughter” like relationship. For once, Matilda feels as if she has someone for her, someone who cares about her and someone who loves her for who she is. For once, she understands the true meaning of family. Guaranteed the type of emotion that is encountered wouldn’t have been there without the acting of these fantastic roles.
A classic movie has concept behind it, one with true meaning. Matilda doesn’t understand what family is until she meets Miss Honey. Many of us grow up in a loving atmosphere, and many of us also tend to take advantage of it. It’s different with Matilda. She didn’t live the childhood many of us did. The concept was that even though Matilda had a family, she had the wrong perception of what family really meant. Fortunately, she found someone who cared for her, and who later on became her guardian. She started a new life with her “real family,” which is different because many of us are lucky to be born with it. No one ever told Matilda they loved her, until Miss Honey came into her life. The most important things in life are taken for advantage and people fail to realize that. Matilda unwraps what’s important in life, and what isn’t.
Finally, many may say that Matilda isn’t a classic, but that’s because they don’t understand the plot behind it. It is true that Matilda wasn’t solely based around a moral lesson, because yes it did encompass many humorous lines, but overall the message behind it was what made it a classic movie. A classic movie cant be categorized unless watched more than once, and Matilda is one of those movies!
All in all, Matilda is one of the best classic movie one can ever watch. It incorporates quality acting, an emotional plot, and a hidden concept that only mistakened people will disagree with!

  1. I liked how you chose a theme to evaluate (if it was a classic movie)and I thought you successfully persuaded your audience. Most movie reviews I find separate the top paragraph to talk about first impressions, overall feelings, or their thoughts on the movie. In this case, I think it might be beneficial to wait until the next paragraph to talk about the plot and state an overarching idea in the introduction. I like how you thoroughly explained the meaning of the book and its significance in relation to life, but I would use stronger diction to further emphasize your feelings and interpretation. By using strong diction in a movie review, it makes it sound more like a review and an evaluation than a summary.

  2. This review is successful as it takes a movie that is familiar with most people, and right away appeals to pathos as it talks about family, and how Matilda's differs from our own. It goes through each main part of Matilda's life, and each event described helps what makes it a classical movie, and by choosing a childrens movie, it shows how timeless it really is since it's evident that even today, most of these aspects still apply. I think a lot of the review's success comes from the fact that it is such a remembered movie. The constant mentions of family also help appeal to the emotions, since the reader is likely to enjoy a movie with true family values. I had a similar claim, and I noticed that a lot of our criteria was similar, so it was interesting to see an argument simlar to my own.
